Butler Falls Twice At Green Bay

Junior Alex Boros sparked Butler's biggest hitting day in several weeks, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs dropped a pair of narrow decisions at Green Bay in a Horizon League doubleheader at Ben Garot Field on Sunday, April 27. The host Phoenix won the opener, 3-2, in 10 innings and then claimed the nightcap, 4-2. Boros had six hits in nine trips to the plate, including a couple of doubles. She was one of five Butler players to have multiple hits on the day. The Bulldogs rapped out eight hits in the opener and added 12 more in the second game. The 20 hits were the most in a doubleheader for the Bulldogs since April 2, when Butler had 23 hits in a twinbill against Bellarmine. Green Bay (8-20, 2-8 Horizon League), playing its 2008 home-opener, scored the game-winning run in the first game with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning. Freshman Sara Junion doubled off of Butler relief pitcher Nikki Naffziger to drive in Dana Brockman with the winning run. The Phoenix took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs off of Butler starter Jennifer Chasteen. But the Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Erin Jackson opened the inning with a single and sophomore Bridget Paine followed with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Kelli Hahn and a pop out by freshman Haley Oskins set the stage for senior Amy Hyerczyk, who delivered a two-run single to centerfield.
Boros led the Bulldogs in the opener with three hits, including a double, while Hyerczyk and Jackson each added a pair of hits. Green Bay jumped in front in the first inning of the second game with three runs off of Naffziger. That proved to be all the runs the Phoenix would need. Butler scored once in the second inning on singles by Jackson, Paine and sophomore Melissa Shofroth, but the Phoenix answered with a single run in the bottom half of the inning. Boros plated Butler's final run with a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning. Boros topped the Bulldogs with three hits in the nightcap, while Shofroth added a pair of hits. Naffziger (7-11) was charged with the loss in both games. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 16-27 overall record and a 5-12 league mark. |
