Bulldogs Drop Two Games At Morehead State

Host Morehead State rallied for a 4-3 victory over Butler in the final inning of the opener and then captured a 7-1 decision in the nightcap to sweep a non-league doubleheader at University Field in Morehead, Ky., on Tuesday, March 31. The two setbacks snapped Butler's five-game winning streak and left the Bulldogs at 11-18 on the season.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game to grab the one-run decision. Courtney Seiler opened the inning with a single off of Butler starter Lauren Ott, and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She then scored the tying run on a single by Bianca Cardenas.

Junior Kristen Malinkey came on in relief of Ott and retired Samantha Sparks on a sacrifice bunt, before walking Bri Jones and Samantha Woodall. Rebecca Butler then drove in the winning run with a single to leftfield.

Butler took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by freshman Mallory Winters and a run-scoring double by freshman Erin Falkenberry. After Morehead State tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs went back on top in the seventh on Paige Ashton's second home run of the season.

The Bulldogs managed just four hits off of Morehead State starter Sarah Funston (6-3), while the Eagles had just five hits off of Ott (4-5) and Malinkey.

Butler also led, 1-0, through three innings of the second game, before the Eagles exploded for seven unearned runs off of Butler starter Breanna Fisher (5-9)_in the bottom of the fourth inning.


Lauren McNulty led the Bulldogs in the second game with a pair of hits, while Alex Boros had a run-scoring double in the contest.

The Bulldogs will return to action with a doubleheader at Eastern Illinois on Thursday, April 2.
