Bulldogs Defeat Raiders 2-1 In League Action
Sept. 26, 2002
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Butler women's soccer team scored two first half goals to open the Horizon League season with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Wright State Raiders on Thursday (Sept. 26) at Kuntz Stadium. The Bulldogs improve to 5-2 with the victory, while WSU falls to 2-6-1.
After 20 minutes of scoreless action, Hadiatu Dumbuya broke free from the Raiders' defense directing a cross to Rachel Pivarnik, whose left side shot just made it past the WSU keeper. Pivarnik's goal was her second of the season.
The Raiders finally got on the board at 76:06 while Blair Kaminski tapped in a loose ball past Amber Stauch to pull Wright State back to within one. But, the Bulldogs' defense kept the Raiders from seriously threatening throughout the remainder of the contest, sealing the victory for the hosts.
"After a dominating performance by us in the first half, we seemed to rest back on our heels in the second half, and they (Wright State) started to take it to us," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "Still, I am impressed by our effort - only allowing two shots and one goal is a great effort by us all in all."
Butler outshot the Raiders 15-2 on the game. Stauch went the distance for the Bulldogs, recording one save on the game, while her counterpart, Emily Florhe tallied five saves and allowed both Butler goals.
Butler will travel to Detroit to take on the Titans on Sunday (Sept. 29) at noon.
