March 10, 2008
Indianapolis, Ind. - After finishing as one of the top scorers and rebounders in the conference during the regular season, Butler junior center Lade Akande earned a spot on the 2007-08 All-Horizon League First Team. The league office made the announcement on Monday (March 10). A native of Robinson, Ill., Akande completed the regular slate as one of the elite post players in the league, ranking third with 16.2 points and 1.3 blocks and fourth with 6.5 rebounds. A three-time league player of the week recipient, she has been one of the most accurate shooters in the nation this season, ranking among the top-30 in Division I with a 55.6 field goal percentage. The Bulldogs' leading scorer in 17 games and leading rebounder in 14, Akande has posted a team-best 26 double-figure scoring efforts, including eight with 20 or more points, while registering four double-doubles. Her 471 points this year are the fifth-highest single-season mark in school history, while her 1,349 career points are the seventh-most all-time. "We're very proud of Lade and her efforts throughout the year," head coach Beth Couture said. "She has really improved both as a player and a leader this season. We're excited that she has been recognized for her accomplishments, because she definitely has been a huge part of our success." Akande receives the first all-league first team mention of her career after earning spots on the all-league second team in her previous two seasons while also collecting an all-newcomer team nod as a freshman. She is joined on the first team by Milwaukee center and Player of the Year Traci Edwards, Cleveland State guard Kailey Klein, Green Bay guard Rachel Porath and Wright State guard Sheylani Peddy. The Bulldogs enter the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship as the No. 5 seed and take on No. 4 seed Cleveland State on Wednesday (March 12) beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center.
