Butler, IUPUI Battle To A 2-2 Tie

Oct. 23, 2002

Box Score

The "Backyard Battle" took an extra 20 minutes at frigid Kuntz Stadium, Thursday (Oct. 23), and when the final horn sounded, local rivals Butler and IUPUI left the field with a 2-2 in the non-conference match. The deadlock moved Butler to 8-7-3 on the season, while IUPUI settled at 2-12-2.

The host Bulldogs had several shots at victory in the two overtime periods, but came up empty. Ryan Marques missed a shot from 12 yards out on the right side and IUPUI goalkeeper Jason Puskas stopped a point-blank shot from Thulio Goncalves in the first overtime period. In the second overtime, Harold Spooner popped a shot over an open goal and Puskas tipped away a shot from Nick Pantazi.

Ricky Del Toro had IUPUI's best scoring opportunity in the second overtime period with a shot from the right side that Butler goalkeeper Grant Barrie knocked away.

The two Indianapolis squads battled to a 0-0 tie through the first 45 minutes. Butler had seven shots in the initial period, while the Jaguars managed just one attempt. Both teams picked up the pace in the second half.

Senior Michael Mariscalco broke the deadlock and gave Butler a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the second half when he took a rebound off the left post and blasted a shot past Puskas from 10 yards away. Marques had taken the original shot which hit the post. The goal was Mariscalco's ninth of the season and the 35th of his career.

The Bulldogs made it 2-0 11 minutes later on Scott Olsen's lob shot from 25 yards out over the outstretched hands of Puskas. The unassisted goal was Olsen's third of the season.

IUPUI stormed back on two goals by sweeper Ben Higginbotham. Both came off of corner kicks by Brian Brooks. The first Higginbotham goal was scored at 62:04, while the final goal came at 75:39.

Butler finished with 24 shots in the match, while IUPUI ended with 16. Barrie, who went the distance for the Bulldogs, had four saves, while Puskas notched eight.

The Bulldogs return to Horizon League play on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Wright State. IUPUI is back in league action on Friday, Oct. 25, with a home match against Western Illinois.
