Butler And Cincinnati Tie, 1-1, In Two Overtimes

Oct. 9, 2002

Box Score

The Butler men's soccer team held a lead for nearly 45 minutes, but a late second-half goal by host Cincinnati tied the contest and the two teams settled for a 1-1 finish after two overtime periods in a non-conference match at the Bearcats' Meyers Field on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The tie left the Bulldogs with a 4-7-2 record, while Cincinnati moved to 5-4-1.

Cincinnati tied the match with less than seven minutes remaining when Josh Gardner's corner kick deflected off a Butler defender and into the net. The unassisted goal at 83:26 was Gardner's second of the season and broke up the shutout bid by Butler goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt.

Both teams had one shot on goal in the first overtime period, but both came up empty. In the second overtime period, Reinhardt turned away three shots on goal.

Butler broke a scoreless deadlock with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when senior Michael Mariscalco took a pass from teammate Nick Pantazi and blasted a shot into the back of the net from 25 yards out. It was Mariscalco's fourth goal of the season and the 30th of his career.

Cincinnati had 23 shots in the match, including 10 in the second half, while Butler attempted 11 shots. Reinhardt, getting just his third start for the Bulldogs, finished with a Butler career-high 11 saves.

The Bulldogs return to Horizon League play on Friday, Oct. 11, with a match against Detroit at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. The league match is slated for 7 p.m.
