Bulldogs Fall to Quinnipiac in 2006 Season Finale
April 29, 2006
Sophomore Cliff Smith had four goals and an assist and freshman Jeremy Sieverts added four points, but it wasn't enough as host Quinnipiac posted a 12-9 win over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac improved to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in Great Western Lacrosse League play, while the Bulldogs finish the 2006 campaign at 4-10 (1-4). Senior Doug Mathias scored a man-up goal at the 7:59 mark of the first period to break a scoreless tie. Junior Adam Wade assisted on the play. After two Quinnipiac goals, Sieverts scored the first of his two goals with 16 seconds to play in the opening quarter for a 2-2 tie. Quinnipiac scored the first three tallies of the second period before Smith got on the board with a goal at the 8:54 mark of the second period. That brought Butler within two at 5-3. The teams then traded goals twice before the half with Butler's scores coming from Sieverts and senior Phil Brauch. The Bobcats had a 7-5 lead at the half. A Will Morgan score and extra-man tally from Smith tied the game at seven with 8:12 remaining in the third period. However, Quinnipiac would score five of the next six goals sandwiched around the start of the fourth quarter to take command of the game.
Seniors Eddie Morley, Josh Murray and Eric Trama each scored five points and goalie C.J. Squires stopped 19 shots for Quinnipiac on the team's Senior Day. Statistically, Butler won most of the battles Saturday. The Bulldogs won 17 of 24 face-offs (Brauch went 14-of-21) and had a 44-32 advantage in ground balls. Each team took 34 shots. Brauch led the team with nine ground balls. Gary Gambarani and Carlos Navarro each added six pick-ups for the Bulldogs. Smith fired 12 shots, including 10 on goal. Freshman Kyle Harer got the start for Butler and made one save. Junior Ryan Kaiser came on in relief and had four stops. The Bulldogs had 12 extra-man opportunities, compared to just four for Quinnipiac. Butler converted three of those opportunities. |
