Former Bulldog Craig Kahoun enters his fifth season on the Butler sidelines. In his four seasons as Butler’s head man, Kahoun’s Bulldogs have a 20-34 record, including a 5-8 mark during the 2003 campaign. Kahoun, who served as an assistant coach during the 1999 season under former coach Jon Hind, took over the reins of the Butler program when Hind relinquished his coaching duties to take over as Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations in the Butler athletic department. After his playing days at Butler were finished, Kahoun became an assistant coach at Ohio State University, where he spent two seasons. He returned to Butler for the 1999 season, and helped the Bulldogs to an 8-7 record, a No. 16 national ranking at the end of the season, and a share of the GWLL title. Kahoun lettered for the Bulldogs from 1993-96, was a three-time captain of the squad and was a first-team Great Western Lacrosse League selection all four seasons. The GWLL “Player of the Year” in 1996, Kahoun was honored as a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association honorable mention All-America performer that same season, becoming the first Bulldog in program history to earn All-America honors. Kahoun’s name is scattered throughout the Butler record book. He owns three of the school’s top ten efforts for goals scored in a season, including a school-record 46 scores as a sophomore during the 1994 season. He also finds himself among Butler’s season leaders in assists twice, and holds three of the top five scoring efforts in school history. He is one of just three players in Butler history to reach the 60-point plateau, which he accomplished with 43 goals and 17 assists as a freshman in 1993. A two-time team MVP, Kahoun was picked to play in the Division I North-South All-Star game following the 1996 season, and was the recipient of the Frank “Pop” Hedden Award, which honors the outstanding freshman athlete at Butler, in 1993. Kahoun’s 149 career goals and 204 career points are Butler records and his 55 career assists rank fifth on Butler’s career leader board. The Bulldogs earned a solid national reputation during Kahoun’s four-year career, as the squad posted a 30-27 record in its first four seasons of competition. Butler finished 9-4 in his senior season, and won three of four games within GWLL play. The Butler coach returned to the field in the summer of 2002, playing for the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse. He finished the season ranked fourth on the team in scoring. Kahoun is a native of Worthington, Ohio, and was a three-time all-state honoree and prep All-America selection at Thomas Worthington High School. His younger brother, Cory, finished a fine Butler career of his own during the ‘99 season. Cory was a 1999 third-team All-American and finished in third place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 139 points on 111 goals and 28 assists. A 1996 Butler graduate, Kahoun received his bachelor’s degree in sociology. He has also done additional work towards a master’s degree in administration. Kahoun and his wife, Jenny, were married in June of 2002. The couple has a daughter, Grace, who was born in June, 2003. |
