Alex Davis, Ryan Schmidtz Named Academic All-District
Nov. 12, 2007
Butler defensive backs Alex Davis and Ryan Schmidtz have been named to the first team of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V team, chosen by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The two were among 24 players honored from District V, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba. The Butler duo were among four defensive backs honored on the academic squad. Also chosen in the defensive backfield were Ryan Patrick of Indiana State and Matt Watkins of Valparaiso. Davis, a senior special education major, started all 11 games for the Bulldogs in 2007 and finished fifth on the team in tackles with 40. He was second on the team in pass interceptions with two and tied for second on the squad in pass breakups with three. He was a second team Pioneer Football League Academic All-League pick in 2006, and he was named a 2006 Josten's Scholar-Athlete. Schmidtz, a junior biology major, was named to the Academic All-District V team for the second consecutive year. He started Butler's first seven games this season, before being sidelined by an injury. He still led the Bulldogs in pass breakups with four, and he had 18 tackles and one pass interception. He was a first team PFL All-Academic selection in 2006, and he was a 2006 Josten's Scholar-Athlete. Butler was one of eight schools to have more than one player named to the Academic All-District V team. Northwestern led the way with four selections, while Minnesota and Valparaiso each had three picks. Notre Dame, Indiana, Illinois and Indiana State joined Butler with two picks each. To be considered for Academic All-District recognition, an athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or important reserve.
The 24 District V first team players will be considered, along with All-Academic choices from seven other districts, for selection to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be released in late November. |
