Parker Smith Named To Preseason Football All-America Team

July 1, 2003

Butler linebacker Parker Smith, who led the Bulldogs in tackles last season, has been named to the 2003 Sports Network Preseason I-AA Mid-Major All-America football team. He is one of six players from the Pioneer Football League North Division selected to the preseason honor squad.

Smith was a first team All-PFL linebacker last season. He led the Bulldogs and ranked second in the conference with 102 tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks. He had a team-high 73 total tackles, one pass interception, one forced fumble and two pass breakups. The senior from Indianapolis started all 10 games for the 4-6 Bulldogs.

The preseason All-America team included nine players who will face Butler this fall. Selected from PFL champ Dayton, which will visit the Butler Bowl on Oct. 25, were linebacker Brian Heizman and offensive lineman Jarrod Wachter. Other Butler foes selected were wide receiver Michael Gasperson of San Diego, offensive lineman Avery Fleming of Austin Peay, wide receiver Rob Giancola of Valparaiso, punter Ryan Horvath of Drake and quarterback Neil Lobig, defensive lineman Phil Polony and defensive back Armar Watson, all of Duquesne.

The Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major All-America team covers 23 football programs from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Northeast Conference and the Pioneer Football League.
