Offensive Outburst By YSU Sends Bulldogs Home From Horizon League Championship
May 24, 2007 Chicago - Nothing seemed to go right at all for the Bulldogs in the first elimination game of the US Army Horizon League Championship, as Youngstown State amassed an overwhelming offensive attack and the Butler defense provided little support, as the Bulldogs dropped out of the tournament via a 20-7 defeat to the Penguins at Les Miller Field on Thursday (May 24). YSU collected 23 hits in the game, including five homers and four doubles, while the Butler defense struggled to four miscues in the field. Strong winds in the Chicago area did not aid the pitchers causes any further, with several seemingly routine fly balls finding their way over the fence. The contest started innocently enough, with the Penguins taking an 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo homer to right center by Mike Turjanica before the Bulldogs answered back in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot by Ricky Chomicz, his third of the season. The wheels fell of the Bulldog pitching staff in a hurry after that, as YSU plated five in the third and a whopping eight in the fourth to take a commanding 14-2 lead. The Bulldogs put up a bit of a rally attempt in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to nine, but the Penguins answered right back in the top of the fifth with three more runs to rebuild their lead. Rick Betsch provided a powerful effort of his own at the plate, collecting his first two home runs of the year in going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI. Chomicz finished with a pair of hits, as did Joe Pauley. Butler finishes the season with a 22-33 record, while the Penguins advance in the tournament with an 18-36 overall mark.
