Long Ball Attack Powers Bulldogs Past Valpo, 12-10

April 25, 2008

Box Score

Valparaiso, Ind. - The Bulldogs took advantage of four home runs, including a pair by junior outfielder Colin Ziegel, in out-muscling host Valparaiso on Friday (April 25) afternoon, as Butler scored a 12-10 decision over the Crusaders in a back-and-forth affair at Emory G. Bauer Field.

The win sends the Bulldogs to 9-26 on the year and 5-12 in Horizon League play, while Valpo drops to 11-25 on the year and 3-8 in conference.

Butler jumped out in front early on the Crusaders, as Kyle Schultz continued his hot streak at the plate with a three-run home run in the first inning, his first of the season.

The Bulldogs climbed to a 4-0 lead in the second after Kyle McLaughlin tripled to right center before coming home on an RBI single by Rick Betsch.

The Crusaders would come right back, however, plating a run in the bottom of the second before evening the score with a three-spot in the third.

Ziegel would break the tie on the first pitch he saw in the top of the fourth, drilling his fourth home run of the season to straightaway center field. Butler would add another run in the inning after Michael Letzter scored an unearned run on a double-steal.

An RBI double followed by a two-run home run gave Valparaiso its first lead of the night at 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bulldogs would once again respond in the ensuing innings, scoring three times in the fifth and twice in the sixth to build up an 11-7 advantage.

Joe Pauley led off the fifth with a single before taking second on a ground-out and scoring on a single through the right side by Grant Fillipitch. Ziegel returned to the plate and delivered another deep drive - this time over the left field fence - to give the Bulldogs a 9-7 lead.

Pauley would take his turn at hitting the ball deep in the sixth, crushing a two-out drive to center for his team-leading seventh home run of the season.

Valpo would cut the margin to 11-9 with a two spot in the bottom of the frame, but the Crusaders would get no closer in the contest, as an RBI single in the eight by Fillipitch provided an extra bit of insurance and close out the Butler scoring.

Jamie Feldheiser picked up his second win of the year after working 4.2 innings of relief. Brian Deter notched the save with a perfect ninth.

Betsch and Ziegel collected three hits each, with Ziegel adding three RBI and two runs scored. Pauley added two hits, two RBI and three runs, while Alex Montagano chipped in two hits and two runs scored.

The Bulldogs and Crusaders close out the three-game series on Saturday (April 26) with a double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
