UIC Topples Bulldogs, 17-5

Indianapolis, Ind. - UIC jumped for seven runs in the first three innings before blowing the contest wide open late, as the Flames sent the Bulldogs to a 17-5 defeat in the series finale on Sunday (April12) afternoon at Bulldog Park.

The Flames plated three runs before the Butler bats took their turn in the first and added four more in the third to take a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs with a two-out run in the bottom half of the third, as Michael Letzter and Rick Betsch hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third for Griffin Richeson, who bunted an RBI single down the third-base line that brought Letzter across.

UIC plated single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to build up a 10-1 advantage before the Bulldogs cut the deficit to seven with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Butler loaded the bases on a lead-off double by Betsch, a walk by Kyle Schultz and a hit by pitch from Grant Fillipitch before Colin Ziegel roped an RBI single to center. The Bulldogs added another run on an RBI fielder's choice by Steve Kaffel.

The damage could have been worse, but UIC managed to work out of the inning with the bases still loaded.

The Flames put the game completely away in the eighth, scoring five runs on six hits and a costly Butler error, before adding two more in the ninth.
 

 

Letzter added an RBI triple and Betsch an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to close the scoring for Butler.

Betsch and Letzter each finished with three hits, while Richeson added a pair.

Butler returns to action on Wednesday (April 15) when it hosts SIU-Edwardsville beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Bulldog Park.
