Butler Women Place Second, Men Fourth At Horizon League Championship

Seniors Gary Blackman and Lissa Vogley each won two individual events and helped Butler to a strong showing at the 2003 Horizon League Track and Field Championship, which wrapped up at the Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis on Friday, May 9. Butler's women placed second in the competition, while the Butler men finished fourth. Blackman, who won both the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meter run, was named the Horizon League's Newcomer of the Year for Running Events. He set a conference record of 8:57.29 in the steeplechase, and then came back less than two hours later to win the 10,000 in 31:10.58! Vogley won the women's 10,000 meter run in 36:54.06 on Thursday evening. Despite running in a pouring rain, she recorded the third-fastest women's 10,000 meter time in league history. Vogley continued her strong performance on Friday by winning the 5,000 meter run in 18:02.10. Butler's women also picked up a wins from junior Becky Lyne in the 800 meter run (2:12.78) and sophomore Monika Schneider in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:50.44). Schneider, who also placed third in the 1500 meter run, set a new league standard with her steeplechase time. The Butler women were locked in a tight battle for second place, behind league champ UW-Milwaukee. Four teams were in contention for the runner-up spot heading into the final events, but the Bulldogs wrapped things up with a strong showing in the 5,000 meter run. Vogley won the event, while freshmen Maria Beitel and Monica Behney placed third and sixth, respectively. Butler also picked up a runner-up finish from sophomore Jill Snyder in the pole vault (10-06) to help seal second place. Butler's men also dominated the 5,000 meter run, with four Bulldogs placing among the top six finishers. Senior Brad Bennett won the event in 15:18.01, junior Lennon Wicks placed third in 15:26.99, junior Brian Dunn came in fourth in 15:36.20 and sophomore Bill Peterman wound up sixth in 15:47.96. The other first place finish for Butler's men was turned in by the 4 X 100 team of Mitch Briggs, Alex Hall, Kofi Anokwa and Brandon Cook. That quartet paced the field in 42.70. Cook also placed second in the 200 meter dash (21.63) and third in the 100 meter dash (10.87). Detroit won the men's competition, followed by Youngstown State, Loyola, Butler, UW-Milwaukee and UIC. Coming in behind UW-Milwaukee and Butler in the women's competition were Youngstown State, Loyola, Detroit, UIC and Wright State. UW-Milwaukee's Peter Corfeld was named women's Coach of the Year. Kristy Naef of UW-Milwaukee was tabbed as the Outstanding Performer for Running Events, while her teammate, Lynda Thiel, was picked as the Outstanding Performer for Field Events. Another UWM performer, Tenia Fisher, was picked as the Newcomer of the Year for Running Events, while Jennifer Frierson of Detroit was named Newcomer of the Year for Field Events. In the men's competition, Detroit's Guy Murray earned Coach of the Year honors. Youngstown State's Eugene Harris earned Outstanding Performer for Running Events, while Detroit's Matt Groh was selected as the Outstanding Performer for Field Events. Detroit's Brian Richotte was picked as the Newcomer of the Year for Field Events. |
