Scott Lawler played on the first Butler men's soccer team in 1989 and immediately became the face of the program. He had 14 goals and 12 assists in the that initial campaign, and he went on to finish his career with 50 goals and 27 assists. He remains Butler's all-time leading scorer with 127 career points, and his 50 goals are still Butler's all-time record. The 12 assists that he recorded in that first season remain as Butler's single season assist record, and he shares the Bulldogs' single match record for goals (4) and points (8). Lawler, who started 75 consecutive matches, was a three-time all-conference performer and a two-time All-Mideast selection. He played on the gold medal winning North team at the 1991 U. S. Olympic Festival, and he went on to play professional soccer with eight different teams.
