John Dedman has served as the assistant sports information director at his alma mater since August, 2003. In his current role, he is responsible for the day-to-day media activities for women's basketball, men's lacrosse, volleyball, women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's swimming, in addition to serving as the secondary contact for the remainder of Butler's 21 athletic teams. He also serves as the athletics department's liaison to College Sports Online, which hosts www.butlersports.com and coordinates the department's streaming package. In his short time at Butler, Dedman has assisted with the media operations for the 2005 Men's Basketball First and Second Rounds and the 2005 Women's Basketball Final Four. Butler served as the co-host for both events. He oversaw media responsibilities for the 2003 Horizon League Volleyball Championships (the first Horizon League championship other than men's and women's basketball to be televised) and 2004 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championships. He will also be involved in the 2006 Men's Basketball Final Four, which Butler brings to Indianapolis for the fifth time. Dedman arrived at Butler after serving several months on the communications staff at the Horizon League. Prior to joining the Horizon League staff after graduation, Dedman worked as a media relations intern with the Indiana Pacers from January to May, 2003. He also served as a communications intern with the Indiana Sports Corporation (ISC) from May to December, 2002. He assisted with media operations at the 2002 FIBA World Basketball Championship, the 2002 Circle City Classic and the Youthlinks Indiana Golf Tournament. Dedman also served on the 2004 FIFA World Swimming Championships (25m) media staff. A public and corporate communications major, Dedman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Butler in May, 2003. He successfully completed Butler's Honors Program, and was named one of Butler's "Top Ten Outstanding Male Students." He is a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and served as co-sports editor of the Butler Collegian in 2000-01, and as a staff columnist until his graduation, winning the Garlick Award for Sports Writing for his weekly sports column, "Dedman Talking." Originally from Harrodsburg, Ky., Dedman was a five-sport athlete at Harrodsburg High. He individually qualified for the Kentucky state championships in tennis, track and cross country. Dedman now lives in Carmel, Ind., just north of Indianapolis. |
